Iris van Herpen - The Sympoiesis Performance

Filmed at the opening of Sculpting the Senses at the Kunsthal Rotterdam, this film documents a live performance conceived by Iris van Herpen and light artist Nick Verstand. The performance originated as the opening act of the Sympoiesis Haute Couture show in Paris, where an ethereal airfabric garment became the canvas for a constantly evolving choreography of light, movement, and technology.

Inspired by the pioneering experiments of Loïe Fuller, the work transforms an almost invisible textile into a living sculpture. As the performer moves through space, light responds in real time, generating luminous forms that appear to emerge from the body itself. The result is neither fashion, performance, nor installation alone, but a fleeting encounter between all three disciplines.

Presented at the opening of the Sculpting the Senses exhibition, this iteration brought one of Iris van Herpen's most ambitious collaborations into a museum setting, allowing visitors to experience the work beyond the runway. The exhibition has since travelled internationally, introducing audiences around the world to van Herpen's unique intersection of couture, science, nature, and technology.

This film captures both the performance itself and the remarkable craftsmanship behind it—an exploration of how fabric, light, and movement can merge into a single living form.
